The PIL newsletter is published twice a year (April/May and October). This is a condensed version in English.

Welcome to PIL!

The PIL Unit is an arena for university-level pedagogical development and interactive learning at the University of Gothenburg.

Conference on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (HKG 2013)

The Gothenburg Conference on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (HKG 2013) takes place on 17 October 2013. The theme: Towards a Pedagogical Academy. The conference invites teachers and teaching staff to discussions, exchange of experiences, and inspiration.

The conference, which has students’ learning in focus, takes its point of departure in the Vision 2020 of the University of Gothenburg which includes the venture of development of a Pedagogical Academy. The conference language will be Swedish.

PIL courses offered in English

The spring 2014 PIL courses will open for applications on 23 October. These courses are offered in English:

  • Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1: Basic Course, 5 hec (HPE101)
  • Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2: Subject Field Pedagogy, 5 hec (HPE102)
  • Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 3: Applied Analysis, 5 hec (HPE103)
  • Supervision in Postgraduate Programmes, 5 hec (HPE201)
  • Professional Teaching Skills: English as the Medium of Instruction, 7.5 hec (HPE301)

Mini-course: Supervision at undergraduate level

PIL is organising a two-day mini-course for teaching staff and supervisors working on undergraduate programmes. The course covers supervision goals, quality criteria for the supervision product, "good supervision", appraisals and feedback during supervision, difficulties and problems in the supervision situation, and leadership in connection with degree projects, essays and project work. The mini-course is held in Swedish.

Mini-course: Better syllabi

A two-day mini-course for people in charge of pedagogy at undergraduate level. The mini-course is held in Swedish.

Workshops: Teaching with Adobe Connect

Adobe Connect is a tool for e-meetings. PIL holds workshops on Adobe Connect for teachers. If you want a workshop in English, please contact Svante Eriksson.

Workshops: Film your lectures

PIL holds workshop for teachers on how to film their lectures. If you want a workshop in English, please contact Svante Eriksson or Torbjörn Fraenckel.

Feedback on your lectures

Feedback on your lectures is offered for free to all staff at the University of Gothenburg by the PIL unit. The feedback is given in Swedish or English by Lars-Åke Kernell.

Course development support

Get free help with the issues that crop up when developing a new course (or course modules) using IT. We can help with matters such as examination, participation and distance-learning activities, as well as how to use a computer in the classroom, lab or seminar room. The support is given in Swedish or English.

Digital Resources offer support and inspiration

PIL's Digital Resources offer support and inspiration for those who want to use digital tools to develop their teaching. The resources are organised into contexts where they may be relevant:

  • Examination, eg seminars and exams in GUL
  • Lectures, eg video lectures and presentation tools
  • Supervision, eg distance supervision via Acrobat Connect or Skype
  • Communication, eg GUL as an alternative to e-mail
  • Collaboration, eg co-authoring via Google Docs
  • Assessment, eg summative assessment in GUL

At this point, the Digital Resources are only available in Swedish.

Information on plagiarism and copyright

PIL's website has detailed information (in Swedish) on plagiarism as a pedagogical challenge and on copyright for university teaching staff. 

PIL films

Course reportage
University TV at the Information Office has produced Swedish-language reportage about three of PIL's courses, interviewing course leaders and participants. The videos are in Swedish.

Project footage
Several of the projects funded by PIL have been documented via reportage videos. University TV has produced Swedish-language reportage and interviewed those involved in the projects. The videos are in Swedish.

Relay reportage
PIL's relay seminars were a series of seminars that focused on pedagogical examples taken from all of the University of Gothenburg's faculties. Each example was documented through reportage and interviews. The reportage and videos (in Swedish) are on the PIL website.

University of Gothenburg's learning management system (GUL)

GUL is a web-based platform with events and virtual rooms for information, communication and collaboration between teachers and students. If you need GUL education given in English, please send an e-mail to the GUL support group.

Borrow an apartment in Villa Martinson, Jonsered

For teachers at the University of Gothenburg who need a quiet place to write about teaching and learning in higher education, it is possible to borrow an apartment in Villa Martinson in Jonsered outside of Gothenburg. The apartment can only be borrowed for a limited period of time. For more information, please contact Susanne Skyllberg.
