Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and associated pedagogical approaches

A workshop with Kassahun Weldemariam, Eddi Omrcen and Johan Boman, hosted by the Gothenburg Center for Sustainable Development and the PIL Unit.

We are living in times of environmental, social and economic crisis. At such a critical moment of planetary and societal history, education plays a critical role to equip students with the required knowledge, skills and attitude, and this has resulted in the development of the broad concept of Education for Sustainable Development, ESD. Although ESD, by now, appears to be an established notion, knowledge around pedagogical approaches that support students' learning in today's precarious times are still challenging. Recent research highlighted that lack of well-developed and sufficient pedagogical approaches is one of the factors affecting the implementation of ESD.

In this workshop, among other things, participants will discuss the following key questions:

  • How can higher education pedagogy be transformed for meaningful and interrelated engagement with sustainability challenges?
  • How can staff confront and change hegemonic pedagogical approaches in higher education?
  • How can staff make pedagogical transition from specific subject mastery to encapsulating and engaging with complexity that ESD requires?
  • What support is needed?

Contact person at PIL: Håkan Fleischer

Date and time: Wednesday 5 October at 10:00 AM to noon.
