Newsletter April 2011

The PIL newsletter is published twice a year (April and October).

Hi there!

The PIL Unit is an arena for university-level pedagogical development and interactive learning at the University of Gothenburg. Read on for more about our work with digital resources, NU2012, PIL's autumn courses and the Seminar on teaching and learning in higher education.

A date for your diary: NU2012 in Gothenburg, 17-19 October 2012

In 18 months' time you will be able to go to NU2012, Sweden's largest forum for the development of higher education. A warm welcome to everyone who is interested in teaching and university-level pedagogical R&D. The conference will be held on 17-19 October 2012 in central Gothenburg. Host: Association of Swedish Higher Education (SUHF). Organiser: University of Gothenburg in conjunction with Chalmers University of Technology, the universities of Borås, Halmstad, Jönköping, Skövde and Karlstad, and University West.

Digital Resources offer support and inspiration

PIL's Digital Resources offer support and inspiration for those who want to use digital tools to develop their teaching. The resources are organised into contexts where they may be relevant:

  • Examination, eg seminars and exams in GUL
  • Lectures, eg video lectures and presentation tools
  • Supervision, eg distance supervision via Acrobat Connect or Skype
  • Communication, eg GUL as an alternative to e-mail
  • Collaboration, eg co-authoring via Google Docs
  • Assessment, eg summative assessment in GUL

At this point, the Digital Resources are only available in Swedish.

Digital tools workshops

The autumn will see PIL offering a number of workshops that will enable the participants to gain a more in-depth knowledge of how to use various digital tools in teaching situations. These workshops will be based on PIL's Digital Resources, with each session starting out from one of the contexts used to structure Digital Resources, eg Lectures or Examination. The workshops will be held in Swedish.

PIL's development projects

PIL constantly runs and finances development projects in university pedagogy and interactive learning. There are currently six projects in targeted areas underway which will come to an end during 2011. Ten new announced projects receive PIL funding during 2011-2012.

Collaborating IT lecturers

One of PIL's special projects is Collaborating IT lecturers, a faculty-wide network for IT lecturers at the University of Gothenburg. The network aims to act as a link between the activities of the faculty boards and to be an active forum for the development of IT and varying forms of teaching at the University of Gothenburg.

Project footage

Several of the projects funded by PIL have been documented via reportage videos. University TV at the Information Office has produced Swedish-language reportage and interviewed those involved in the projects. The videos are in Swedish.

University of Gothenburg's learning management system (GUL)

GUL is a web-based platform with events and virtual rooms for information, communication and collaboration between teachers and students. If you need GUL education given in English, please send an e-mail to the GUL group.

Feedback on your lectures

Feedback on your lectures is offered for free to all staff at the University of Gothenburg by the PIL unit. The feedback is given in Swedish or English by Lars-Åke Kernell.

Course development support

Get free help with the issues that crop up when developing a new course (or course modules) using IT. We can help with matters such as examination, participation and distance-learning activities, as well as how to use a computer in the classroom, lab or seminar room. The support is given in Swedish or English.

Relay reportage

PIL's relay seminars were a series of seminars that focused on pedagogical examples taken from all of the University of Gothenburg's faculties. Each example was documented through reportage and interviews. The reportage and videos (in Swedish) are on the PIL website.

PIL supplies information on assessment and acknowledgment of qualifications of teaching and learning in higher education and portfolios in pedagogy.
