The PIL newsletter is published twice a year (April and October). This is a condensed version in English.

Welcome to PIL!

The PIL Unit promotes pedagogical development and interactive learning at the University of Gothenburg.

Apply for our courses from Wednesday 19 April

The autumn 2023 PIL courses will open for applications on Wednesday 19 April, tentatively around 9:00 am. Places are limited and will be assigned on a "first come first served" basis. The courses may quickly be fully booked, so don't wait to apply. If you belong to Sahlgrenska Academy, please note the information below!

These courses are offered in English:

  • Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1: Basic Course (PIL101) – in the form of modules!
  • Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2: Subject Field Pedagogy (PIL102) – we offer PIL102 as a faculty-independent online course – read more below!
  • Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 3: Applied Analysis (PIL103)
  • Supervision in Postgraduate Programmes (PIL201)

PIL101 is held as modules

During 2023, the PIL course Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1: Basic Course (PIL101) is held in the form of modules. The module system is a pilot project.

To be eligible for a certificate for PIL101, the participant needs to read four modules. Two modules are mandatory: Introduction to Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the Legal Module. The participant also chooses two of these optional modules:

  • Microteaching
  • Lesson Plan
  • The Good Lecture
  • Teaching methods to promote students’ critical information awareness
  • Teaching methods for PhD students in natural science (only for PhD students at the Faculty of Science)

PIL102 as a faculty-independent online course

In the autumn term of 2023, we offer Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2: Subject Field Pedagogy (PIL102) as a faculty-independent online course in English. This course is only aimed at those who do not speak Swedish. It is open for applicants from all of the university's faculties.

NB: Special application form for staff at Sahlgrenska

Do you belong to Sahlgrenska Academy (or VGR)? Then you must use a special application form for the courses PIL103 and PIL201 (but not for PIL101 or PIL102). Application period for Sahlgrenska: 3 April – 30 April. After that period, submitted applications are ranked by your department.

Try out the learning environments of the future in Learning Lab

For three years, University of Gothenburg collaborates with Akademiska Hus in Learning Lab, located in Johanneberg. Learning Lab consists of three unique rooms: The Studio is a 180 square meter room with advanced digital technology for sound, light and projections and great flexibility in furnishing. The Flexroom is a slightly smaller room of 120 square meters. Makerspace is a workshop equipped with both traditional tools and modern digital technology.

All teachers at the University of Gothenburg are welcome to use the premises for educational activities. You will receive educational support, help and inspiration from PIL and from Learning Lab's own digital scenographer to find ideas and understand how the premises can be used for different activities.

The PIL and Open University seminar series

Academic integrity 2.0: Re-developing a self-study course for students writing with sources
Seminar with Christina El Saidi och Lisa Larsson (University of Gothenburg). The seminar is held in Zoom.

Webinar: CodeGrade – a tool for learning and grading programming

In more and more subject areas, programming has become an important knowledge for students to master. In this webinar, CodeGrade will showcase their code learning and grading platform that integrates with Canvas. CodeGrade helps with (automatically) grading students' code and helping educators provide their students with faster, better and more personalized feedback. During the webinar, all the integrated tools will be showcased. Furthermore, the current experience and benefits of the tool within the Software Engineering Division at GU will be discussed by Francisco Gomes (Assistant Professor).

The HKG 2023 Conference

The Gothenburg Conference on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (HKG 2023) takes place on Thursday 16 November. Everyone at GU is welcome to submit contributions to the afternoon's parallel sessions. From the morning and until lunch, there will be three keynotes on the topic of Student Health and Work Environment.

The main conference language will be Swedish. However, one keynote speech will be in English. Additionally, some of the afternoon presentations will probably be in English as well.

The PIL Studio

The PIL studio offers the university's teachers the opportunity to produce their own teaching material such as lectures, interviews, conversations etc. PIL staff with pedagogical and technical knowledge helps with the recording and editing, and provides advice. On request, we can also make films outside the studio. The finished film is usually delivered via the university's video portal GU Play.
