The PIL newsletter is published twice a year (April and October). This is a condensed version in English.
The PIL Unit promotes pedagogical development and interactive learning at the University of Gothenburg.
On 1 January 2021, the PIL Unit's credit courses will be replaced by certification courses. Apart from the course codes, the new courses have the same names as the old ones. They also have the same content and basic structure.
The spring 2021 PIL courses will open for applications on Wednesday 21 October, tentatively around 9:00 am. Places are limited and will be assigned on a "first come first served" basis. The courses may quickly be fully booked, so don't wait to apply. If you belong to Sahlgrenska Academy, please note the information below!

Do you belong to Sahlgrenska Academy (or VGR)? Then you must use a special application form. Application period for Sahlgrenska: 12 October – 8 November. Submitted applications are then ranked by your department.

This PIL101 course is especially aimed at PhD students at the Faculty of Science. The course will focus on the teacher's role as a laboratory work supervisor, calculation exercise instructor and field assistant and is primarily aimed at those with little teaching experience. Together with other doctoral students, you will practice planning, implementing and analyzing your own teaching. Exchange of experience, research literature, higher education pedagogy and regulations / governing documents are also included. The course gives the same eligibility as other PIL101 courses. Persons at the Faculty of Science who are not PhD students can also apply for the course, but the seat will be subject to availability. The same applies to persons at other faculties.

From 23 September 2020, new rules apply to teachers who use video in their teaching. Public videos need to be subtitled in order to meet accessibility requirements. In Canvas’ closed course rooms, it is still allowed to post non-subtitled videos. For many students though, especially those with disabilities, it is important that teaching materials are adapted to students with special needs.

Do you need information on how to switch from on-campus to online teaching? At the PIL website, you will find instructions and tips about tools and working methods that are useful for online teaching and learning.
Due to Corona, some parts of the University's courses and programs are held as hybrid teaching. This means lectures and seminars where students can participate in the discussion either online or on campus, synchronously. For a teacher, it is a challenging task to have students online and in the room at the same time.
Advice and tips about hybrid teaching
GU Online is a recurring mini-conference on internet-based tools in higher education. GU Online 2020 will take place on 11 November from 9.00 to 12.20. The conference theme: Exchange of experience about digital tools in teaching. The conference language will be Swedish. The conference will be held in Zoom.

Referencing: Understanding and Scaffolding Students’ Developing Academic Literacy
Three two-hour webinars in which referencing is approached as a central element of students’ learning at university and as a pedagogical challenge for university teachers. The webinars aim to discuss specific challenges for students and teachers, as well as to identify approaches to support students’ development in terms of referencing as practice.
