Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 3: Applied Analysis (PIL103)
The overall aim of the course is to write an independent paper about a theme within teaching and learning in higher education. The participants should investigate and expand on an idea or a problem based on research and proven experience. This theme is discussed, interrogated, and analyzed continuously throughout the course. Many choose to carry out educational development work where they critically reflect on their own data.
This course is an online course.
In addition to the final text seminar, the course participants meet continuously online. The content consists of topics that are relevant to the independent paper. The participants' papers are discussed in groups. The collegial conversation and the exchange of experience have a central role and the independent paper is the only assessable component.
Please note: This course is only open to those who are employed or have a teaching assignment at the University of Gothenburg, are accepted to or are completing their doctoral studies at GU or intend to apply for associate professor (docent) at the university. Scope: The course comprises the equivalent of 3.5 weeks of full-time studies.
Reading list: The current reading list will be available on the web page Litteraturlistor för PIL-enhetens kurser / Reading lists for the PIL unit's courses no later than eight weeks before the course starts.
Admission principle: We apply the admission principle "first come, first served", based on the time and date when a complete application is submitted.
Before you apply, you need to have your participation approved by your head of department.
Course of studies
We recommend you to take PIL101 before PIL102. To get admittance to PIL103, you must have passed both PIL101 (or HPE101) and PIL102 (or HPE102), or have qualifications assessed as equal by a faculty at the University of Gothenburg.

Prerequisites
- You must be an employee or doctoral candidate at University of Gothenburg and have a Degree of Bachelor or equivalent.
- You must have passed the course Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1: Basic Course (HPE101 or PIL101) or have qualifications assessed as equal.
- You must have passed the course Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2: Subject Field Pedagogy (HPE102 or PIL102) or have qualifications assessed as equal.
(It is not necessary to have completed HPE101/PIL101 and HPE102/PIL102 at the time that you apply, but you must have passed the courses before you can start PIL103. When you click on the link "Apply for the course here", you will find information about the last day to supplement your application.)
About course certificates
PIL103 is a certification course. All course meetings and assignments are mandatory and require attendance. In some cases, it will be possible to submit a supplementary assignment that corresponds to the meeting or assignment missed. To be approved for a certificate, you must also achieve the learning objectives in the course syllabus.
PIL103 was introduced on January 1, 2021 as a replacement for the credit course HPE103, which was then phased out. The content and basic structure of PIL103 are the same as for HPE103, and the course gives the same eligibility.
Information for doctoral students
Have you taken PIL103 as a compulsory course in your doctoral studies? When you have received your certificate of a completed and approved course, you should hand the certificate to the person who is the administrator (or equivalent) for your doctoral studies. That person registers the course as approved in Ladok for doctoral studies.
