Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2: Subject Field Pedagogy (PIL102)

The overarching aim of the course is to develop the course participants' ability to analyse, plan, debate, and design university education and the own pedagogical approach based on research and proven experience.

The focus is on the organisation and planning of courses and modules. Contextual factors, goals, content, learning activities, teaching, evaluation, assessment methods and university students' independent studies as well as the impact of the choice of course design are included in the course. These topics are highlighted from different perspectives and the relationships between these are debated. Particular attention is devoted to the course syllabus document.

Three courses in English

We offer PIL102 as a faculty-independent online course in English. This course is only aimed at those who do not speak Swedish. It is open for applicants from all of the university's faculties. Read more below!

PIL102 is also offered as faculty-specific courses at the university’s eight faculties. Of these eight courses, PIL102 at the Faculty of Science and PIL102 at the IT Faculty are offered in English. The other PIL102 courses held at each faculty are in Swedish.

Course of studies

We recommend you to take PIL101 before PIL102. To get admittance to PIL103, you must have passed both PIL101 (or HPE101) and PIL102 (or HPE102), or have qualifications assessed as equal by a faculty at the University of Gothenburg.

PIL102 as a faculty-independent online course in English

This is an online course, held in English. The dimension of subject specificity is given space in your own syllabus development throughout the course. This means that staff at all faculties can participate in the same course.

Please note: This course is only aimed at those who don't speak Swedish.

Please note: This course is only offered to staff, to doctoral students and to applicants for docentship at the University of Gothenburg.

About course certificates

PIL102 is a certification course. All course meetings and assignments are mandatory and require attendance. In some cases, it will be possible to submit a supplementary assignment that corresponds to the meeting or assignment missed. To be approved for a certificate, you must also achieve the learning objectives in the course syllabus.

PIL102 was introduced on January 1, 2021 as a replacement for the credit course HPE102, which was then phased out. The content and basic structure of PIL102 are the same as for HPE102, and the course gives the same eligibility.

Information for doctoral students

Have you taken PIL102 as a compulsory course in your doctoral studies? When you have received your certificate of a completed and approved course, you should hand the certificate to the person who is the administrator (or equivalent) for your doctoral studies. That person registers the course as approved in Ladok for doctoral studies.
