Poised for new learning management system

News: Apr 26, 2017

Tomas Grysell, head of the Pedagogical Development and Interactive Learning unit (PIL), signed yesterday (25 april) a letter of intent thereby informing SUNET of the University of Gothenburg's intention to subscribe to SUNET's LMS service Canvas by Instructure, as the future replacement for Ping Pong (GUL).
Preparations for a formal decision to adopt Canvas at the University of Gothenburg are underway within the scope of a pre-study which is scheduled to be completed during the month of May.

"After ten years with Ping Pong we now see the end of an era before us. Canvas is a modern and stable platform that will help us form a digital support that meets the university's needs," says Maria Sunnerstam, assistant head of the PIL unit and also system owner for GUL.

SUNET took part in NORDUnet's 2016 Framwork Tender for Learning Management System. 15 Swedish higher education institutions, including the University of Gothenburg, monitored the process and evaluated the different suppliers products. Canvas was declared a clear winner in usability and technical solution. A total of 250 user tests were carried out with user groups comprising of teachers, students and administrators. A similar tender has been carried out in Norway, where Canvas also was chosen as the preferred bidder.

"We have great hopes when it comes to Canvas as our new LMS. Canvas is already used in Sweden at KTH and Luleå University of Technology, where they are very satisfied. A system change is always a challenge, but it's going to be worth it" says Emma Breding Strömberg, system manager and administrator for GUL.
