Filmmaking rooms
Most of the faculties at University of Gothenburg have one or two filmmaking rooms that teachers can reserve. These rooms are planned and equipped so that you can record lectures, interviews and other uncomplicated productions on your own.
Reserve a filmmaking room
Use TimeEdit to reserve a room. Go to the Lokaltyp (Room type) menu and choose Inspelningsrum. The system will then show the filmmaking rooms that you are permitted to reserve. Please note that the room Faraday can't be reserved via this link.
There are nine filmmaking rooms:
- School of Business, Economics and Law: room C25
- Faculty of Humanities: room E213.

- Faculty of Science, Johanneberg: room Faraday (please contact Jakob Welander, jakob.welander@physics.gu.se to make a reservation)

Uses of the filmmaking rooms
When the rooms were planned, the goal was to find a good balance between simplicity and flexibility. The equipment should be easy to use; at the same time, it should be possible to change the room in order to make different kinds of productions.
- Record a lecture where the student sees the lecturer and the visual presentation
- Record a lecture where different artifacts are shown and demonstrated
- Record tutorials where the student can see what the instructor does on the screen
- Record an interview with a colleague or a guest researcher
- Record a small panel discussion with three or four participants
Opportunities for new arrangements
- Record a personal greeting as an introduction to new students
- Give the students opportunities to repeat difficult course moments.
- Record lectures that replace classroom lectures, in order to use the classroom time in a more interactive way (flipped classroom)
- Turn a course into a distance course and record all lectures
- Give spoken feedback on students' papers
Equipment in the rooms
- Computer for recording and editing, including camera and microphone
- Software: Camtasia and GU Play (for recording)
- Document camera
- Studio lights for good lighting
- Green screen for so-called keying, meaning that the filmed teacher can be placed in front of any background, for example "inside" a visual presentation
To keep in mind when making a film
- Try to act the same as if your students were present
- Practice a few times; most teachers soon get used to lecturing without students in the room
- Stand up – it will feel like you are lecturing and your body language will be a bit more dynamic
- Make sure that your recorded lectures are maximum 15 minutes long, preferably shorter
- Try to find ways to vary the content and the way you film; having two lecturers in front of the camera at the same time is a good way to create dynamics
- Try to record both with and without a complete script and find out which works best for you
- Figure out beforehand how many times you are going to reuse the recording
- Publish the film in GU Play and embed it in Canvas – or publish the film on YouTube if you want to reach a bigger audience
